Folks
This time of the year is the most critical for recruitment, not least of juniors.
We have just run two campaigns for All Stars Cricket and Swallows & Amazons programmes which reached an incredible 8,000 local people of parent age using paid-for advertising on Facebook.
But the most powerful recruitment approach is still ‘word of mouth’. By a long chalk. Now ‘word of mouth’ is far more powerful thanks to social media.
We have recently seen the power of a Facebook campaign driven by hundreds of committed and enthusiastic – indeed passionate – supporters in relation to the Farmers’ Market.
Now I am asking for your support in a little experiment to see if we can drive that sort of engagement for our junior programmes.
If you are on Facebook, please go to the newly set up All Stars Cricket at Staplehurst Cricket & Tennis Club and Swallows & Amazons at Staplehurst Cricket & Tennis Club pages. You can use the links below.
If you use a PC or laptop or the browser on your tablet, the Facebook pages should look like the image above. It will look different on your phone depending what make and whether it’s Android or IoS.
But you should be able to:
– ‘Like’ the pages.
– ‘Follow’ to receive automatic updates.
– ‘Share’ it to your timeline and to any local Facebook groups you belong to (although all the obvious community ones have been done!)
But above all, ‘Invite Friends’. All of them. Or at least the local ones.
Help spread the word and generate traffic which in turn will generate more. If we could get 100 people to do all or some of these things, the pages will reach thousands, maybe even tens of thousands of people, with the personal endorsement of someone they know. You. How powerful is that?

Staplehurst Petanque Club at Staplehurst Cricket & Tennis Club are looking to welcome new members this summer.
We run frequent ‘Come & Try’ days by prior arrangement so that you can experience the sport.
Whether you are new to the game or already have some experience of playing, please come along and see what we’re all about.
Staplehurst Pétanque Club is registered with the Kent League and competition matches are played on a home and away basis each Wednesday night throughout the season
(April to September).
The only equipment you will need is a set of boules, spare sets of which we are able to loan you, as well as advice on where and what boules to buy. Competition class boules are sold in sets of 3 by different weights, sizes, patterns and hardness and the cost starts from around £50 a set.
Social membership of Staplehurst Cricket and Tennis Club together with a Pétanque England playing license is all that is required to participate at Kent League level.
If you are interested in finding out more or have any questions regarding our club then please either leave a comment here, see the Pétanque posters on the clubhouse noticeboards or email alan.heasman@yahoo.com or cherylcurd@hotmail.com
What is Petanque?
Pétanque – pronounced “pet-tonk”, sometimes called boules, is a game that can be enjoyed by all the family and socially with friends for fun or more competitively in the Kent League or open competitions at clubs around the country.
French in origin, Petanque is now played right across the world and is one of the most inclusive activities available where people of all ages, gender, ability and fitness can play equally together.
Played with hand-sized hollow metal boules on various types of dirt or gravel surfaces (terrains) the object of the sport is to get as many of your team’ boules closer to a small wooden Jack (cochonnet) than that of your opponents.
All boules of one team nearer to the jack than any boule of the opponent’s counts for one point each. Usually games are played up to 13 points.
Pétanque is perfect as a low impact exercise involving throwing, bending and walking. However it also requires team play, concentration, tactics and strategy. Being a relatively inexpensive activity the social side of the sport is another of its great benefits.
As long as you can hold and throw a boule you can play Pétanque.

It was the Spring equinox last week. But we all know that summer is really on its way when Alan Reader takes the fences down around the square.
So we are on the countdown to the new season. And, for the first time, the Club’s new financial year starts on April 1 to coincide with the membership year.
The vast majority of members are now paying their subscription by annual or monthly direct debit and so have to do nothing. The next payments will be taken automatically on Monday.
If you are not yet on direct debit, you can still set up through the Club website – it takes a few minutes if you have your bank details to hand – here https://www.staplehurstcricket.com/membership.html
And, if you are not already benefiting from the membership discount scheme, you can find more details here too. There are still volunteering opportunities to meet the 18-20 hours a year requirement. We are particularly keen to hear from more potential communicators and administrators – see the roles here https://www.staplehurstcricket.com/volunteers.html
